Migration Update - July 2, 2010 :::: The results of the spring surveys are in and the USFWS has released the Trends in Duck Breeding Populations for 2010. Habitat conditions across the survey areas were similar to 2009, with pond counts 34% above the long-term average. Bird counts totaled 40.9 million birds, down slightly from the 42 million birds counted in 2009, but remain 21% above the long-term average.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Develops Strategy to Help Waterfowl and other Migratory Birds Weather the Gulf Coast Oil Spill :::: WASHINGTON -- In a few weeks, millions of waterfowl and other migratory birds will soon begin their fall migration to wintering and stopover habitat along the Gulf Coast. In anticipation of this event, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with partners to anticipate and minimize the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill on these birds.

Maryland Artist Robert Bealle Wins 2009 Federal Duck Stamp Contest :::: Robert Bealle an artist from Waldorf, Maryland, took top honors today at the 2009 Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest. Bealle’s painting of an American wigeon will be made into the 2010-2011 Federal Duck Stamp, which will go on sale in late June 2010.
