Federal Ammunition’s Premium® Black Cloud FS Steel waterfowl ammo departed from previous shotshell technology in two ways. First, their FLITESTOPPER™ steel shot has a cutting edge around its diameter that is designed to cut on impact and actually create a larger wound channel for more impact on ducks and geese. FLITESTOPPER pellets are mixed with 60-percent Premium steel shot for more uniform patterns. The second part of Black Cloud’s secret is their unique and patented FLITECONTROL™ wad. Its rear-braking technology works opposite a standard wad—staying with the shot charge longer for tighter patterns. It also gets to the target quicker and with more overall energy. But like all breakthroughs, sometimes it leaps ahead of the supporting technology. Black Cloud wasn’t performing especially well with some of the current aftermarket choke designs. Even Patternmaster tubes, long known for astonishing long-range performance, weren’t recommended for use with Black Cloud ammo. With the widespread popularity of Patternmaster chokes, Federal sought to find a solution. The result is the Patternmaster Black Cloud choke tube. It was designed with Federal’s assistance and specifically for Federal Black Cloud ammo. It features the Black Cloud name and logo on the package and choke itself. So how well does it work? The Patternmaster Black Cloud choke tube’s proprietary design actually improves the performance of Federal Black Cloud Ammo. Our testing averaged above 90% in a 30” circle at 40 yards with new Federal Premium Black Cloud FS Steel #2 and BB loads.
